Short Summary

The Senior Corporate Accountant is responsible for overseeing aspects of corporate expenditures as assigned, supporting the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and Management Discussions and Analysis (MD&A), and handling monthly sales tax reporting. This role also leads the contract management process, collaborates with business teams to ensure adherence to Corporate and Governmental policies and procedures. Additionally, the Senior Corporate Accountant provides ongoing support to the Manager, Corporate Accounting and Accounts Payable, and is responsible for certain business units. 

Job Description

FINANCIAL REPORTING: 

  • Supports to the Manager, Corporate Accounting and Accounts Payable for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting, in-depth analysis, budgeting, and other supporting documents.
  • Supports the preparation of quarterly and annual consolidated income statements, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and prepares consolidated notes to the financial statements as assigned. Prepares other external reporting requirements as assigned.
  • Prepares financial sections of the MD&A.
  • Other internal and external reporting as required. 

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Prepares, reviews, and confirms corporate payment requisitions, including staff reimbursements, ensuring their accuracy and adherence to corporate policies for the assigned business units.
  •  Records corporate monthly transactions and performs monthly accounting close procedures for corporate business units.
  • Manages the overall Corporate and Real Estate Fixed Asset module.
  • Supports internal and external audits as it relates to fixed assets.
  • Manages the overall process of Contract Commitments: creation, execution, ongoing maintenance, including accruals and provisions against commitments, and reviewing expired commitments. Also manages change orders to ensure accurate open commitment balances.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert by responding to questions and resolving issues related to Contract Management.

MONTHLY SALES TAX FILING AND PAYMENTS

  • Responsible for the preparation, accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of the monthly filings and payments of GST/HST/QST remittances for CLC, as well as the reconciliation of sales tax balances.
  • Acts as the primary internal sales tax subject matter expert on tax compliance and regulations and serves as the first point of contact for Government authorities and Taxing Authorities for queries, account setup, and closure.
  • Supports and leads all internal and external sales tax audits.

OTHER SUPPORT FUNCTIONS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

  • Provides backup to the peer Senior Corporate Accountant when required. 
  • Provides support to the Manager, Corporate Accounting and Accounts Payable in providing G&A budget to actual variance analysis as well as other reports for Board and Senior Management meetings, during internal and external audits, and the Accounting/Finance group to identify opportunities and implement changes regarding process improvements.
  • Assists in maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and guidelines manual.
  • Provides a supporting role for key Accounting/Finance personnel in their absence.
  • Ensures the necessary signing authority and supporting documentation is completed in accordance with CLC policy.
  • Reviews and improves internal controls, processes, and procedures.
  • Performs special projects and ad hoc tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in business, finance or accounting required.
  • Professional accounting designation required (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA).
  • Minimum of five to seven years of accounting experience required, with a minimum of two years of experience in real estate accounting.
  • Strong internal and external financial reporting experience required.
  • Significant technical accounting knowledge and experience required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with JD Edwards an asset

Able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines, conflicting demands, frequent interruptions, and heavy work loads.
Working in an office environment.
Light to infrequently moderate physical effort; Requires handling of light and moderate weight objects including office equipment and other office supplies.
