Short Summary
The Community Stewardship Assistant will support the planning and facilitation of stewardship events in Downsview Park and assist with opportunities that help promote the Park. As park liaison, they will combat invasive species through community education and programming.
Job Description
- Assist with the implementation of ecological restoration projects with a focus on engaging community participants and volunteers in ‘hands-on” stewardship activities.
- Support the mission of Downsview Park in building and maintaining partnerships with community members.
- Assisting environmental threat mitigation efforts including invasive species identification and manual removal
- Planting of native species
- Support community and grow native plants in the Downsview Park Volunteer Greenhouse
- Act as a resource and support for the Park volunteers and program participants during shifts
- Assist Park users with engaging stewardship opportunities with the support of Education Supervisor
- Ecological monitoring
- Delivering community stewardship events including:
- Securing all necessary tools, supplies and materials for the program
- Setting up and cleaning up all supplies
- Coordinating and training volunteers to deliver restoration activities.
- Promote welcoming and positive, inclusive outdoor experiences
- Support administrative tasks such as data entry, survey analysis, and grant reporting.
- Assist with Downsview Park community events, as needed.
- Perform other duties as may be required.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary student or graduate, within the following, or similar fields of study (or work experience equal to): Indigenous stewardship knowledge, Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, Biology, Resource management, Environmental studies/Environmental science or similar
- Knowledge of Toronto’s flora and fauna
- Experience working with the public, community groups or volunteers
- Bilingual (French/English, along with conversational ability in one or more languages (Spanish, Italian, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Mandarin or Portuguese) are considered a strong asset
- One or more years of customer service experience is an asset
- Community outreach or program delivery is an asset
- First Aid and CPR certification an asset
Working Conditions
Recruitment Range: $20.65/hour
